Zimbabwe Police Hunt for Armed Robbery Suspect

Bulawayo police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a suspect in connection with attempted murder and armed robbery cases that occurred in Gwanda and Bulawayo in June and July 2023.

The suspect, Simelweyinkosi Dube, also known as Mthee, is accused of breaking into a home in Gwanda with three accomplices and demanding gold and cash.

The suspects pepper-sprayed the victims, tied them up, and forced them to open a safe, from which they stole US$8,000, 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and a 9mm pistol.

“On 30th July 2023 the complainant a female adult aged 74 of Insindi Gwanda and her daughter a female adult aged 37 were seated in their lounge in Gwanda when the wanted suspect Simelweyinkosi Dube, Mlungisi Sibanda a male adult aged 44 of Nketa, Alex Cabangani Moyo a male adult aged 37 and Vusumuzi Moyo a male adult aged 27 both from Cowdray-Park Bulawayo broke into their house armed with a knife and a pistol,” he said.

“They pepper sprayed the victims threatening to kill them whilst demanding for cash and gold. The complainant’s husband who was in the bedroom came to check what was happening. They also grabbed him, and they tied their hands with electric cables. They assaulted them and force-marched them to an office where there was a safe,” said Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube.

“He implicated Alex Cabangani Moyo, Vusumuzi Moyo and the wanted suspect Simelweyinkosi Dube. Police managed to arrest Alex Cabangani Moyo and Vusumuzi Moyo leading to the recovery of the CZ pistol loaded with seven rounds. The arrested accused persons admitted to have committed the robbery together with the wanted suspect,” said Inspector Ncube.

On 1 August police detectives managed to track Dube to his girlfriend’s house in Cowdray Park and engaged in a shootout with police which left two police detectives severely injured.

Dube managed to escape and is on the run.
