Zambian Official: Morocco, Zambia Are Entering ‘New’ Stage of Cooperation

Haimbe said that the standing cooperation and discussions between the two countries are a way for the Zambian people “to learn more about the culture of Morocco.”

Rabat – Ongoing discussions between Morocco and Zambia reflect a “new stage” in the history of cooperation between the two countries, Zambian MP Mulambo Hamakuni Haimbe said on Monday in Rabat.

Speaking to the press, Haimbe said that the standing cooperation and discussions between the two countries are a “way for the people of the Republic of Zambia to learn more about the culture of Morocco and be able to interact more freely in North Africa.”

The Zambian official added that Rabat and Lusaka should continue to work together to boost cooperation in several areas, especially industry.

Haimbe is part of a parliamentary delegation from Zambia that is on a state visit to Morocco. Zambia’s first National Assembly’s Vice-President Malungo Chisangano is heading the delegation.

As part of the visit, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita received Chisangano today in Rabat.

Following the meeting with Bourita, the Vice President expressed her country’s willingness to strengthen and develop relations between Rabat and Lusaka and to “launch joint projects between the two countries.”

In addition to meeting with Bourita, the delegation engaged in “high-level” discussions with Speaker of the House of Representatives Rachid Talbi Alamai, as well as Speaker of the House of Councillors Naam Miyara, Haimbe told the press.

Morocco Zambia relations

Zambia and Morocco have enjoyed strong diplomatic ties over the years, with Zambia repeatedly reiterating support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara.

The Southern African country also backs Morocco’s efforts to support the UN-led political process that aims to reach a peaceful resolution to the dispute.

Zambia maintains that Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan proposal is a “credible basis to end the conflict.”

In October 2020, the African country took a major step in supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity by opening a consulate in Laayoune. In the same month, Zambia opened a resident embassy in Rabat.

Trade between the two countries is equally flourishing. The two countries’ efforts to boost economic cooperation resulted in a 25% increase in bilateral trade between 2020 and 2021.
