Zambian MP Emmanuel “Jay Jay” Banda, wanted on robbery charges, was arrested in Zimbabwe after escaping custody in August. He had fled from Chipata Central Hospital, where he was under guard, and a 2 million kwacha bounty was placed on his capture.
Zambia’s Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu confirmed Banda’s arrest in Harare. Banda was detained by Zimbabwean police at a flat he rented, and extradition procedures are now in progress. The government is investigating how he escaped and received help in Zimbabwe.
The opposition Patriotic Front (PF) party called the arrest an “abduction,” accusing the government of bypassing proper extradition protocols. The Zambian minister denied these allegations, stating the charges predate Banda’s political career.
Zambian police, working with Interpol, are finalizing extradition documents. Banda denies the charges, claiming he is being targeted due to his ties to former President Edgar Lungu. He had previously claimed abduction in May, which his family denied.
Banda faces charges of aggravated robbery and escaping custody. The opposition argues the charges are politically motivated, but the government insists he must respect the rule of law as a sitting MP.
