Six EU countries, including Czechia, are calling for the creation of a European instrument to buy cheap Ukrainian grain, Slovak Agriculture Minister Samuel Vlčan said after a meeting with colleagues from the group of Visegrad (V4) and Bulgaria and Romania.
Slovakia currently holds the presidency of the group which includes Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
The countries are also asking the EU to introduce tariff quotas on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products into the EU market, Vlčan told reporters.
The Minister said action needed to be taken quickly as the EU grain harvest will start in a few months and the current surplus on the market means there is no capacity to store the next harvest of wheat. Slovakia has also just temporarily banned products derived from Ukrainian wheat after the discovery of a pesticide banned in the EU.
